This Week's Geek - September 6, 2015

Greetings, Citizens. We're releasing the next episode tomorrow 'From Russia with Love'. But until then, I wanted to share a few things I saw this week that were pretty geekworthy.

First up, Marvel is releasing a bunch of video featurettes online that have been really cool. I really dig seeing how The Vision came to be. There's a nice mix of CG and live performance for that character. Head over to Marvel's YouTube page to get sucked into that worm hole. It's also nice that Avengers: Age of Ultron is out next week. At least digitally (I've pre-ordered through iTunes). The physical DVD/BluRay's won't be out until early October.

Next we have Star Wars has finally released merchandise for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I've read a lot of articles from people who have scored big (the remote controlled BB-8 seems to be the big hit), and some from people have left stores empty handed. It's nice that there's a lot of excitement for Star Wars merchandise again. But I'm sitting this one out. I've pretty much removed myself from the toy-buying game. When The Phantom Menace came out, I spent all my money on toys. I had the entire line of action figures from the movie. And then they got boxed away. They survived (sort of) a flood in my parents basement, but were pretty much all water-logged. All those 'mint-on-card' figures ended up being dirty plastic on warped cardboard. So I dumped them all on Craigslist and said goodbye. Aside from toys, there's also a new Star Wars book which was released. Star Wars: Aftermath by Chuck Wendig. Aftermath appears to be the first in a trilogy of books which will span the gap from Return of the Jedi to The Force Awakens.

Lastly, I wanted to let people know about a graphic novel which is coming soon. One of my podcasting-heroes, Alex Robinson, is releasing his next graphic novel titled 'Our Expanding Universe' (available on pre-order over here). Aside from being an award-winning author/graphic novelist Alex is a podcaster and co-host of two of my favorite podcasts: Star Wars Minute and AlphaBeatical. On Star Wars Minute, Alex and Pete the Retailer dedicate one episode to every minute of the Star Wars movies. From opening crawl to closing credits, they provide their thoughts and opinions as well as trivia to every minute of the movies. They've completed the original trilogy, and are preparing to begin 'The Naboo Movie'. Over on AlphaBeatical, Alex, along with co-hosts: Pete the Retailer, El Adam, and John review and rate The Beatles catalog from A to Z, or more accurately; from 12 to Y. If you're a fan of The Beatles and their music like I am, this show is something you definitely want to put into your ears.

That's all I have for this week. Each week I'm going to try to share some cool content, as well as point people in the direction of other podcasts they may enjoy like I do.

Have a great week, and check us out on the next episode: From Russia with Love.

Thanks... and stuff.

It's been a good week for the Reel Comic Heroes podcast. We launched our Intro and Superman and the Mole Man commentary episodes. The download numbers look very encouraging, so Thank You for downloading and listening to the show. We will continue to add new episodes, and will incorporate some of the feedback we've received in order to make this show even better.

Here are some things I found this week which you may enjoy:

Over on StarWarsMinute podcast, they reviewed the trailer for Episode 1  - The Phantom Menace as a precursor to their new season. During the review they pointed out a really cool video on YouTube. Apparently someone recut the Episode 1 trailer in the style of The Force Awakens teaser trailer from a few months ago. I have to say, when you rearrange The Phantom Menace and use the music and sounds from The Force Awakens, I still get chills. Link below for the video.

In other awesome news; Marvel released a few promotional art pieces announcing the team lineups for Captain America: Civil War. Joining Cap will be: Falcon (and Redwing!), Winter Soldier, Agent 13 (Sharon Carter), Hawkeye, and Ant-Man. On Iron Man's side will be: Black Widow, The Vision, Black Panther, and War Machine. No word yet on which side, if either, Scarlet Witch and Spider-Man will be on.

Meanwhile back at the (Skywalker) Ranch. Via the official Star Wars Instagram account a few more scenes and dialogue were shown. There's a great bit of what appears to be a standoff between Kylo Ren and Finn (who is holding a blue lightsaber).
