Reel Comic Heroes 043 - Octopussy

In this episode we’re taking a look at the penultimate Roger Moore Bond film, Octopussy from 1983. This episode was recorded the night before Sir Roger Moore passed away at the age of 89 and is being posted the day after his passing. Moore was a lot of fun as 007 and he will be missed by many who consider him to be their favorite James Bond.

We’d love to hear from you, our listeners. Share your favorite Roger Moore Bond moments with us and we’ll include them in the next episode.

Reel Comic Heroes 039 - The Thing

Michael Myers, Snake Plissken, and Nada were all brought to the big screen by horror legend, John Carpenter. Carpenter also gave us Kurt Russell as MacReady in a retelling of the sci-fi novella ‘Who Goes There?’ from 1938. John Carpenter’s The Thing is still considered by many to be a sci-fi and horror masterpiece.

Reel Comic Heroes 038 - Blade Runner: The Final Cut with Margo D from Book Vs Movie

Things we learned this episode: Harrison Ford does not always play the lovable rogue, and Blade Runner is exactly like Tom Hanks’ ‘Big’. This episode we’re taking a look at Ridley Scott’s iconic sci-fi film - Blade Runner: The Final Cut.

Please be sure to check out our guest Margo D. on her podcast: Book Vs Movie. Thanks again to Margo for being an awesome guest and for guiding us through the differences from book to movie.

Reel Comic Heroes 035 - Conan the Barbarian with Pete McCue

Welcome back, Citizens. This episode takes us on an adventure of high fantasy. In an age of serpent demigods and warrior-thieves, Conan conquers all while seeking out his vengeance. Conan the Barbarian has the right mixture of direction (John Milius) writing (Oliver Stone) and performances (Arnold Schwarzenegger & James Earl Jones) to make this sword and sorcery movie worth taking a look at.

We’re joined by Pete McCue of the Resurrection Cast: A Battlestar Galactica IntroCast. A big thanks to Pete for joining us and dealing with recording issues that forced us to re-record the entire first act.

Reel Comic Heroes 034 - Swamp Thing with Warner Swopes

Doctor Alec Holland was once at the top of his game. If the top is working in a secret lab deep in the heart of the swamp with his sister or wife. In this episode we’re talking about the “muck encrusted, mockery of a man” in Wes Craven’s Swamp Thing.

We’re joined by Swamp Thing superfan Warner Swopes of NerdMGMT Podcast. A more perfect guest for a Swamp Thing episode couldn’t have been found.

Swamp Thing has an odd mix of characters and a surprising bit of charm. Please let us know what you think of Swamp Thing - we’ll share your thoughts in an upcoming episode.

Reel Comic Heroes 033 - For Your Eyes Only

It’s a little bit From Russia With Love and a little bit On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, it’s For Your Eyes Only. This movie has elements of a lot of James Bond blended into a sort of, greatest hits with the return of Roger Moore as Britain’s top secret agent.

Bond is sent to investigate and recover a secret British spy device before it can be claimed by the Russians. On the way he teams up with a dangerous woman with a desire for revenge.

In this episode we did discover Batman’s secret source of his Bat Shark Repellant!

Reel Comic Heroes 032 - Superman II

Superman is one of the greatest examples in all comicdom of how to be a hero. In this episode we take a look at Superman II and discuss how we feel it holds up.

Superman II is a product of two directors and actors who didn’t want to reprise their roles in a movie that was already in production. This movie has a lot of great qualities, but we don’t know how great of a movie it is.

Do you think this movie stands up to the standards established by the original movie, or the character? Let us know how you feel about Superman II.

Reel Comic Heroes 031 - Raiders of the Lost Ark with No Time For Heroics

Get out your bullwhips and fedoras, Citizens! This episode is all about child endangerment and giving divine weapons to the Nazi’s. That’s right! We’re talking about Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the classic Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Joining us on this adventure were Andrew Hawthorn & Anthony Murphy from the excellent podcast No Time For Heroics. Reel Comic Heroes 030 - Flash Gordon

Flash! You know the rest. On this episode we took a look at the cult classic Flash Gordon from 1980. Neither of us had much previous experience with this movie and we both had different opinions at the end.

Flash Gordon is a pretty straight-forward sci-fi tale of an Earthman sent into outer space where he encounters Ming the Merciless. He is tasked with overthrowing the maniacal ruler of Mingo City and preventing the destruction of Earth.

This movie is like no other movie we’ve talked about on our list. We had a pretty good time talking about it, and we hope you enjoy the episode. Where does Flash Gordon rate for you? We’d love to know if it’s considered to be classic camp fun, or better left forgotten.

Reel Comic Heroes 029 - Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

This is a big one, citizens. We're always nervous to tackle some of the classic films on our list. But as we've learned; "Do or do not, there is no try".

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back picks up three years after Luke destroyed the Death Star. Leia, Han, Chewie and C3PO are on the run from Darth Vader and his minions while Luke and R2 seek out an ancient Jedi master to complete his training.

Empire is considered by some to be the best of the entire Saga. Give this a listen to see where we landed on it.

Reel Comic Heroes 028 - Love in the Time of Monsters

Stop. Before you listen to this episode, we highly recommend you seek out and watch Love in the Time of Monsters. It is a quirky and entertaining horror/comedy that we think you will enjoy. You can find the movie at its official website: http://www.tbcfilms.com/watch/. You can also rent or buy it on iTunes.

Love in the Time of Monsters stars Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th: 7, 8 & Jason X) and Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Fantastic Four 2). The movie is about sisters who battle monsters in the woods while trying to take a family vacation.

Where does the original Mad Max rank among the franchise for you? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter.

We'll be back in two weeks with a special episode. We watched Love in the Time of Monsters and are going to tell you all about it. The original crew is reunited on a mission to stop an alien entity which is headed for Earth. Meanwhile, the original Reel Comic Heroes crew have reunited on a mission to see if this motion picture lives up to the genre it helped define.

Please send us a transmission to let us know what you think of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. How did you first get into Star Trek? We'd love to know.

Reel Comic Heroes 025 - Moonraker

This was a weird movie. Overall, we liked it, but we're not really sure why. A lot of it doesn't work, and it's a bit of a mess. But somehow Moonraker has a charm that left us satisfied. With the Star Wars craze in full swing, Bond had to make it into space as quickly as possible. Let us know what you thought of Moonraker.

Reel Comic Heroes 024 - Alien

Alien is one of those weird movies that is essentially just a slasher/thriller, but because of how well-made it is, it is regarded often as a classic piece of cinema. And rightfully so. This is a movie about survival in the face of pure terror against a creature that, like Keith Richards, cannot be killed by conventional weapons.

Now that we're in space, we're going to stay there for a while. Our next movie review will be covering Roger Moore's Moonraker.

Reel Comic Heroes 023 - Captain America (1979)

Steve Rogers is a hero in every sense of the word. He fights for the little guys, because he was the little guy. Steve Rogers grew up with an inherent sense of justice and bravery. He is as noble as he is strong. Regardless of being bombarded with vita rays enhancing him with strength and speed, he will never stop defending the values he holds so dear. He is truly the Sentinel of Liberty.

This is not a movie about Steve Rogers. The man at the center of this movie may hold the title of Captain America, but little else.

If you've seen the 1979 TV movie Captain America, or its follow-up Captain America II: Death Too Soon, please email us and let us know what you thought. We'd love to share your opinions on an upcoming episode.
